LED Display Upgrade suitable for any S3000XL.
White graphics on Black background. (negative)

This NEW Negative Black LED display has a number of unique design features.

1. Custom Japanese FFSTN (negative) Tri-Axis LCD panel for improved side to side (lateral) and 12o’clock racked view.

This special custom White on Black graphic looks great mounted in the Akai front panel.
Also available is a positive FSTN black on white type. Colour choice will depend on personal preference. Specify which one you want when ordering.

2. Optimised display contrast to match the front panel potentiometer.

This display has been designed to match perfectly the existing contrast control on your akai. Midway (12o’clock) on the front panel potentiometer is the optimal setting, leaving adjustment either side.

3. Oversized LED backlight.

Largest possible backlight footprint, keeping LED’s away from the viewing area to avoid unwanted lightspot. The result is a flat, even background / border with minimal imperfections. With this black negative display, the backlight design was very important. If the border was patchy and uneven due to LED lightspot, it would ruin the look of the display.

4. Custom AA optomised metal bezel.

The metal bezel on this display has been specified to within 1mm of the active viewing area. This is an unusual feature not found on any other display. The result when combined with the oversized LED backlight is a perfect looking negative display, with a flat black border. The AA optomised metal bezel and the oversized backlight can be seen pictured next to a standard display for comparison, see last listing pic.

5. Custom 5000K Pure White LED’s.

The LED’s used on this display are pure white 5000 Kelvin types. They were specifically requested. I wanted pure white light to maximise the display contrast. Combined with the backlight design, custom bezel dimensions and the highest quality ‘FF’ double film compensation / polarizers. The final result is a display that looks nearly like an OLED, nearly ! Its as close as it’s possible to get with a Negative Black LCD.
Its very difficult to get the black display ‘right’
A significant number of revisions were required during design to achieve this aim.
Marginal gains philosophy was applied to everything, the collective result is, indisputably, the best looking Negative Black LCD available.

6. Fully adjustable backlight dimmer.

This feature is absolutely necessary with this black display. Before it ships, the brightness will be set to the level ‘i’ think is correct for the black FFSTN glass. You can, ofcourse, adjust it further to either brighten (anticlockwise) or dim (clockwise) trick is, not to boost it too much. When its clearly readable @ arms length, it’s bright enough. There is a point, a sweetspot, where the graphics are not too bright and not too dim, the background is as black as possible and it looks amazing.
Armed with the backlight dimmer. Its possible to dial in this sweetspot perfectly. It simply needs fine tuning. The dimmer is located top right hand corner, adjustment is possible with a small screwdriver. The display can be connected up, screwed in, then switched on and set up, from your normal, viewing position. Afterwards, the front panel and lid can be reassembled.

This special negative black display was designed in parallel with my NEW Roland JD/JV display. Both share very similar design characteristics. I used the same tricks on both to maximise the performance. Both have the same Tri-Axis glass manufactured in Japan, designed to maximise the viewing angles, oversized LED backlight, custom metal bezel etc etc
The blue Roland display in comparison is relatively straightforward to design. For example, It doesn’t matter how bright the backlight is on the blue display, with the black display, it’s critical.
A lot of time and effort has went into designing and manufacturing this special display. The pursuit of perfection, means the display is built by 2 different companies. One to produce the special Tri-Axis glass. The other, the chip on board and final assembly. The selling price is a reflection of that whole process and ultimately what you’ll recieve in the post, the best looking, best performing, highest quality display for your Akai.
The display will arrive, ready to Plug N Play with pins attached. Also included is a custom cable assembly ive had produced specifically for connecting these NEW akai displays. This cable assembly will enable you to connect the display in other Akais “if” you decide to do that in future.
The idea was to make the design as flexible as possible, meaning, you can change sampler but still keep your special display.
NO soldering or modifications are required.
Simply, bolt it in, connect up, then switch on and adjust the backlight dimmer.

***This display is specifically configured to upgrade your S3000XL. The viewing angle is set during manufacture @ 12o’clock view. Correct for a rack instrument. If you need a black display for your MPC60II, MPC3000 or VX600 see my other listings. The displays listed there are 6o’clock view optimised for keyboard / desktop use. The displays are NOT the same. Its important to fit the correct type, otherwise the look and functionality of the display will be badly compromised***
