Korg Z1Legendary Polyphonic MOSS Synthesizer
Korg Z1The Z1 is like a polyphonic Prophecy housedin a full sized and featured Trinity workstation-like casing! It does all theanalog sounds and more. This is a great analog modeling synth with 12-voicepolyphony, thirteen waveforms, four LFOs, two resonant filters, two effectsunits and more. The ability to create unique sounds is endless. The factorypatches could use some help, but overall the sound is very nice! It has a fullypolyphonic arpeggiator that blows all others away. It has five preset arpeggiopatterns and fifteen user patterns. There is incredible real-time controlavailable with knobs to control the two resonant filters, and a touchcontrolled ‘XY’ pad for tweaking patches in real-time.The Korg Z1 uses the same Multi-OscillatorSynthesis System (MOSS) tone generator found in the Korg Prophecy. The MOSStone generator is a direct descendant of the later abandoned Korg OASYS(Open-Architecture SYnthesis System) development platform. Laterimplementations of the MOSS tone generator were available as optional expansionboards for the Korg Trinity and Triton workstations.The MOSS system, as implemented on the Z1,offered 13 different synthesis algorithms in the form of programmableoscillators. The various synthesis algorithms employed various synthesistechniques such as physical modeling synthesis, analog modeling synthesis, andKorg’s own VPM synthesis. Some of the various synthesis algorithms can becombined together to create a vast range of sound.Standard OscillatorA standard virtual analog oscillator, thisoscillator generates the standard waveforms typically used by an analogsynthesizer such as sawtooth waveforms, pulse waveforms, and trianglewaveforms. Wave shaping is available to add various harmonic characteristics tothe generated sound.Comb FilterThis oscillator creates pitched sound fromnoise or an impulse. It can create a wide variety of soundsnot only noisysounds, but also sounds ranging from synth-bass to strings.VPM (Variable Phase Modulation)Korg’s own first version of phasemodulation synthesis, producing digital timbres similar to the phase modulationsynthesis (marketed as frequency modulation synthesis) made famous by Yamaha’sDX line, Synclavier, and their successors.Ring ModulationThis oscillator simulates ring modulation,a popular feature of analog synthesizersCross ModulationModeling frequency modulation (FM) betweentwo analog oscillators. For the electronic pickup,programmable parameters include pickup position in relation to the tonegenerator (such as a tine).Brass ModelThis oscillator is a physical model of alip-reed instrument such as a trombone, trumpet, or tuba. This unit is in good condition for its age. It comes with all of its original packaging and a photocopied manual. There is some wear on the XY pad but it still works perfectly. This unit is a 110V model, and comes with the converter to work in Australia on 240V power. DO NOT PLUG THE SYNTH DIRECTLY INTO A 240V POWER OUTLET – IT WILL BLOW UP!
