Q. What are these generally used for?
A. These are stereo audio cables, for transferring data (music) from digital devices to a receiver. For instance, most mobile phones have a 3.5mm headphone socket, which allows a user to connect headphones. The headphones are just another form of speaker. If you wish to connect your phone, iPod or similar to a home cinema, hi-fi separate (amp), or your sound bar then you will need a cable just like this. The two RCA connections, which are also known as Phono, or, Coaxial (coax for short) are colour coded; Red (Right Channel) and White (Left Channel) for stereo output sound.
