A Very Rare and Collectable Sennheiser MD 82 Gun / Rifle Microphone.
Designed in the mid to late 1950s, this is the forerunner of the current MKH 816 and 416 microphones, and was Sennheisers very first hyper directional microphone.
This would be a very nice addition to anyone who collects TV equipment from the early days of B&W in the 1950s. These microphones were used by the BBC, as can be seen in the last photo, where one identical to this one is mounted on a BBC Marconi OB TV camera. They were still used well into the 1970s.
This microphone is in really exceptional condition considering that it has worked for a living and is about 64 years old. The wire mesh has only one very slight area of damage near to the very font of the tube, and that is only minor. The tube itself is undamaged and it and the capsule are still looking nice in the original hammer painted finish. The original Tuchel connector has been replaced by an XLR 3 male connector. The very front of the tube is missing the Sennheiser Logo, but if you look at the 1960’s photo of one one on a TV camera, that one is missing the logo too. The rubber mounts have hardened, but they look like the original ones, so that’s not surprising.
This microphone still works very well, and sounds perfect. The grill is 38 inches long, and total length including the capsule is 44 inches.
