Moog Sub 37 Tribute Edition.

MiPa award nominee, 2015.

New in open box with New Moog gig bag (bag has never been unzipped).

Tested for less than 20 minutes, then stored. This has never left the house and has no scratches/marks/blemishes etc. Only a handful of presets tried. Most of the keys and knobs have never been touched. This is immaculate/pristine.

The Tribute edition of the Sub 37 is no longer available and has been replaced by the Subsequent 37. I’m not a fan of the ‘clever’ name myself. The Tribute edition remains the original which generated all the fuss, acclaim, five star reviews, awards and carries Bob Moog’s signature. When it was listed at Thomann, it was their highest rated synth, based on the most reviews.

This was a very successful synth in terms of sales, so there are plenty of them out there, but you won’t find many for sale, which is usually the reassuring sign of a keeper. Some people do prefer the sound of the newer version, which has three upgrades (the keybed, headphone amp and circuit board). This upgrade can be paid for, if you want the the original version with the upgrades. You can even choose to have a partial upgrade (keybed only).

In terms of taste, some people prefer the feel of the old keybed whilst others people prefer the new, and the same can be said for the old sound versus the new, which Moog claims sounds cleaner. There are some who disagree with that marketing claim, which is highly suggestive. But assuming it is true, there are plenty of people who prefer the more aggressive, grittier sound of the original, on that basis. Whether it is or isn’t true, decide whether you want smooth and clean, or aggressive and gritty, and make your choice based on your research. Cynics may claim the upgrade scheme was a good way to generate revenue from thousands of existing Sub 37 owners. Many people can’t hear any difference at all whilst others will claim to prefer the sonic character of one model over another.

There are comparison videos on YT (look in the comments sections) and extensive threads on forums such as gearslutz, vintagesynth and moogmusic, where enthusiasts fight it out. Also read the SOS/keyboardmag reviews. Do plenty of research.

Moog has a distinctive sound but all of the Moogs have a sonic character of their own. There is lots of overlap and you can achieve many sounds on all of them, but the character of one will subjectively appeal to you over that of another. There are long threads with people arguing over whether the Minimoog Model D (either from 70s or the more recent reissue), the Voyager or the various Phatty instruments including the Sub 37 sounds best. There is no consensus. You also have to take into account the value for money of the Sub 37 (with Voyagers and Minimoogs costing more than three times the price of a Sub 37/Subsequent 37) and the fun, creative features of the Sub 37 such as the sequencer and arpeggiator. Plus the lights. It is one of the coolest looking synths around. You get the Moog sound with its famous ladder filter in a lightweight, portable, affordable package. Perfect for fat live leads or basses, or for composing in the bedroom or studio.

Although I tested this briefly to check it powered up ok, I never got round to using this or making use of its vast potential. Plus I’m more of a Poly guy. Moog have just released a Poly (which is crazy expensive) so I will probably end up with a Prophet.
