INTRODUCTIONJustas the precise positions and shapes of the formants in a human voiceallow you to identify theidentityof the speaker as well as the vowel sound spoken, formants make thetimbres of acousticinstrumentsconsistent and recognisable from one instrument to the next. Ittherefore follows thatrecreatingformants is a big step forward for synthesising many types of sounds.Normally,formant synthesis requires at least three formant filters per sound(see appendix 6) withappropriateCVs for each. The RS360 provides all of this in a single module 24HPmodule. However, theRS360is more than just a formant filter. All three filters produce thefour common filter characteristics:low-pass,high-pass, notch and band-pass, with summed outputs that offer thelow-pass outputs of allthreefilters, the high-pass outputs of all three, and so on.Youcan also use the RS360 as an effects unit. If you route differentoutputs (say, band-pass and notch) to two panned channels, you canproduces stereo effects reminiscent of the flangers and phasers usedin early multi-keyboards. Furthermore, you can use the threeself-oscillating filters as multiple audiosignalsources, or create unusual waveforms from the three partials.
INUSETheRS360 provides three, parallel, resonant multi-mode filters withvoltage control of each.FilterModesItoffers four filter modes. These are 24dB/Oct low-pass, 24dB/Octhigh-pass, 12dB/Oct band-pass and12dB/Octnotch filtering, with the cutoff frequencies (Fc) of the high-passand low-pass outputs beingthecentre frequencies of the band-pass and notch outputs. Each of thesefilter characteristics is describedinappendix 2. All four modes are available simultaneously from theappropriate output sockets.CutoffFrequency – Controlling the Filters IndividuallyYoumay control the cut-off frequencies of each of the filtersindividually using the FREQUENCY controlsprovided.When a given Frequency knob is in its fully anticlockwise position,the Fc it controls isapproximately30Hz. As you rotate that knob clockwise, Fc increases until, it itsfully clockwise position,itexceeds 15kHz.Youmay also control a given Fc using the associated CV-IN 1V/OCT input.If you apply a CV conformingtothe 1V/Oct standard, Fc will track the CV in exactly the same way asa standard VCO. If the CV issuppliedfrom a keyboard then, in common parlance, the filter tracks thekeyboard at 100% and, withtheresonance at maximum, you can play the filter as if it were aconventional oscillator.CutoffFrequency – Controlling the Filters SimultaneouslyIfyou wish to modify the cut-off frequencies for all three filterssimultaneously, you may do so usingtheMASTER FREQUENCY knob. You may also use the associated CV-IN VARYinput. This socket anditsassociated DEPTH knob control all three filter Fcs simultaneouslywithin the range V/octto approximately 0.4V/Oct. The former of these makes the inputinvariant to incoming CVs, while the latter makes it oversensitivecompared to the CV-IN 1V/OCT input.ResonanceEachfilter offers resonance, or Q, that you control using itsRESONANCE knob. In the fullyanticlockwiseposition, Q is approximately zero, and there is no emphasis of thesignal at Fc. As yourotatethe knob clockwise, Q increases, whereupon every mode of that filterwill accentuate the harmonicsthatlie close to the cut-off frequency. Increasing Q further, the filterswill exhibit ringing, and willseverelycolour the signals passed through them. If you continue to increasethe resonance beyond acertainpoint, the filter will begin to oscillate, and each mode will producea sine wave at the cutofffrequencydetermined by the various controls. This oscillation is produced byall four audio outputs.Theexact nature of the wave varies from mode to mode, and you can usethese differences to createtonalvariations when using the RS360 as an oscillator bank.AudioSignal Inputs and OutputsTheRS360 has one audio signal input, SIG-IN, which accepts signals inthe range 10V.IndividualLEVELcontrols determine how much of the input signal is fed to each of thefilters. An LED indicateswhena signal is presented to SIG-IN.Thereare four outputs, one for each mode, and these each carry a signal inthe range 10V
