The Monome was the original multiple pad controller matrix that was first conceived around 2005, but has now been copied by products such as the Novation Launchpad etc.
According to wikipedia “An Arduinome is a MIDI controller device that mimics the Monome using the Arduino physical computing platform. The plans for the Arduinome are released under an open source, non-commercial use only license. The Arduinome platform is noted for providing a lower cost alternative to the Monome and allows greater hackability of the interface.”
Basically its a much cheaper DIY Monome that uses the Arduino platform to run the system instead of the hardware of the original. This unit contains dual 8×8 Arduinome grids giving a total of 8×16, or 128 buttons. It is essentially two full Arduinome systems with two Arduino’s and two USB sockets, that can be used in conjunction or as separate control surfaces. Its a fairly large unit, with a top surface measuring 48x28cm and weighing around 4.5kg!
We didn’t build this, but whoever did spent a lot of money on it! The case is beautifully made out of wood with fully jointed corners, and the top panel is a piece of polished 3mm steel that has obviously been custom made by some kind of CNC shop and would have cost a hell of a lot to manufacture. The only minor annoyance is that one of the corners has obviously taken a knock at some point, but as you can see from the photos its not really noticeable and its still holding together 100%. The LED’s under the pads are ORANGE, but probably not quite as bright as they are in the photo!
We should point out that this is not a simple plug and play device. You will need drivers and the appropriate software to get it working. We have had this thing functioning perfectly via MaxDSP, but is really not as simple as just plugging it and off you go! You’re going to have to know what you’re doing, so please don’t bid if you have any doubts about your ability to get this thing working. It does work 100% though, so with a little perseverance and research you can get it up and running fairly easily.
There are a lot of forums, discussion groups and third party websites out there dedicated to the Arduinome, so if you get stuck there should be someone out there who can help.
