This is a Coles 4104 Ribbon Microphone specially designed for use outdoors in windy or noisy conditions for sports commentary or public address at ftes etc. It is meant to be used with the user’s top lip resting against the bar above the mic capsule. Ribbon microphones are generally fragile but this type is designed to be rugged. This particular model is the one with a captive cable (the Neutric XLR plug is included) and, unlike the BBC model, it doesn’t come with the extra external spit shields.
This one is clearly old with a little rust on the screws and some paint chipped off. The lower case screw (towards the handle) has sheared off and it looks like the back frame is slightly bent. However, none of this affects the operation and it was in use until a few months ago.
This item is sold entirely for the benefit of BHBS – Hospital Radio for Bristol, a registered charity.
