DSTec OS1 Original Syn 3 oscillator mono analogue synthesizer – RARE. Condition is Used.
The OS-1 is yellow, constructed of welded steel, feels solid and built to last and is a three oscillator, analogue monster. I have owned this unit from new, bought direct from Dr Dai Hitchings in 2000 when, as the International Product Manager for E-mu Systems, we contemplated distributing it. It has three independent VCO’s with CrossMod (sync), a 24db VCF that can self resonate, a VCA, two ADSR envelope generators, an LFO (plus dedicated PWM LFOs for each VCO), an arpeggiator and MIDI interface. The discreet audio circuitry is pure, glorious analogue. Editing and programming is performed using the ‘parameter grid’ method – a combination of buttons and LED’s arranged as a 4 x11 matrix to represent the editable parameters and using a single data knob and two increment buttons to enter parameter values and a three figure red LED display, and so is easy to operate and get to grips with. In addition to the parameter grid there are three Mode buttons and a WRITE button to save edited programs into one of the 128 user patch memory locations. The back of the case comes with MIDI IN/OUT/THRU, a single mono output jack and a mono input jack for processing external audio signals and a standard 3-pin AC socket. I could bang on about the sound coming from the Original Syn – it rocks the world from the deepest basses imaginable to the purest and/or dirtiest xmod sounds across the 6 octave range of the VCOs, but perhaps it can be best heard and seen in the video link below. These are rarer than hens teeth now and have a unique and stunningly warm sound – analogue with presets that play perfectly, without drift – unless you want to add some – so for live work they are the most reliable analogue sound around, and the price reflects this. Why am I selling – simply, I have shifted my focus almost entirely to video and so this is sitting here not being used, which is a crime, as you’ll no doubt agree if you have ever heard one in use. And so back to the video where that’s exactly what you can do – hear it in use as I conduct a fairly lengthy review of the Original Syn’s features and sounds …. did I mention it’s yellow?
