The legendary Wasp, a monophonic analogue beauty designed by Chris Huggett and manufactured by the British company Electronic Dream Plant. After its release in 1978 the Wasp became a mainstay of discerning musicians as diverse as Chris and Cosey, 808 State, Whitehouse, and Duran Duran. Its quirky appearance belies the power of the circuitry within. Of course there are modern clones but this is original analogue authenticity. Please refer to online reviews for the technical specifications.
This instrument in a very good condition for a 40-year-old synth. It has been kept in storage since the early 1990s and has undergone a recent service and overhaul by the Synthesizer Service Centre, London NW10 (invoice document provided). The plastic casing has weathered the vicissitudes of time and is mostly intact without crumble or flaking (see next paragraph for faults). The touch-sensitive keyboard is responsive on every note and the circuitry outputs the inimitable analogue magic. The built-in speaker works fine although it is as tinny as it always has been; put it through an amp and a powerful speaker system to get the full effect.
Faults are almost inevitable with a vintage synth such as the Wasp: headphone output has a slight but discernible high-pitched tone; though audible it is not overwhelming. The line out is fine and clear. Three rubber pads on the underneath are missing; only one remains. There are light scratches and abrasions on the keyboard and casing. The battery compartment has suffered a detachment of the negative coil – please refer to the photographs. This does not affect the sound and is not a problem when mains-powered but means the instrument will not run on batteries unless repair work is carried out. I would say this is the most serious fault with the instrument and is reflected in the price.
The instrument does not come with the original box or accessories; however, it is offered together with a photocopy of the manual and a modern and appropriate power supply.
As a delicate item the instrument will be dispatched with all due care and attention within a solid although elderly vintage Samsonite suitcase, fully tracked and monitored by the couriers.
