EMS SYNTHI A STYLE SPARTANITE CASE CONVERTED for EURORACK
DON’T TRY TO READ THIS LISTING ON A MOBILE PHONE.
This is a genuine Spartanite hard shell case as used on the EMS Synthi A, converted for Eurorack use.
The EMS Synthi A used by Pink Floyd, Brian Eno, Tim Blake, Jean-Michel Jarre, Hawkwind, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze and many others was famously packaged in a highly portable plastic briefcase made by Spartanite.
These cases sell for 200-300 even without the EMS connection, as a rare 60’s/70’s collectable.
EMS used the Executive Twin model, which needed extensive conversion before use with the Synthi A including separating the lid from the body. This Spartanite has the same exterior shape but different locks and feet. It’s very sturdy with a metal frame, so conversion to Eurorack was the best option. The interior finish is a gorgeous red leather.
Mounted inside are 1x82HP and 1X84/85HP conventional 3mm threaded metal rails. With around 4cm depth you’re not restricted to only sklff-compatible modules, and as you can see in the photos, modules from Behringer, Synthrotek, Takaab, YoMo and others fit easily. You’d use a 4MS Row Power, TipTop Micro Zeus, Eowave Source D’Energie or similar power module with flying bus cables for power.
You can populate the rack either way up, adding a controller keyboard or mixer in the base, or flipping it and storing your performance notes in the lid, or mounting an iPad or other tablet. Closed, the case stands on rubber feet.
You may be able to carry your system fully cabled up, if not, there’s space above and below the rails to store plenty of patch cables.
You can easily build a system which resembles a Synthi A but which is much more powerful. Three oscillators would be a start but you could add two LFO’s as well. With filters and envelopes added, you still have space for a ring modulator, effects unit, pin patching matrix, joystick, and MIDI.
Good condition. A few external scratches but they’re difficult to see on its black finish. Minor dent on one corner seen in photo. Modules, keyboard, iPad and patch cables not included, unpowered case only.
For collection in NW London near a Northern Line tube station and the North Circular Road, with easy parking at the tube station, and payment in cash. I will consider shipping (UK mainland only and never to box services like Argos or Sainsbury’s or to shipping forwarders), after safe non-reversible payment (i.e. bank transfer, or PayPal Friends & Family version, not the dodgy reversible version – why would I ship an item worth several hundred pounds on the basis of a payment which can be reversed for any reason or no reason at all for six months? I’d have to be crazy – and well over 1000 feedback has been achieved by never doing that).
Reversible payments will be ignored.
Shipping costs include full insurance, which is becoming very costly these days, and all the overheads involved in packaging and in accepting customer not present payment – not just the cost of buying some stamps. If you don’t like the shipping costs, feel free to arrange to collect in London and pay cash.
This item is advertised elsewhere with a start price of 350, so is likely to be withdrawn from sale if there are no suitable bids. Please bid early.
Feel free to make contact with any questions well before the end of the listing. Last minute questions may not be answered.
