Focusrite Octopre MK2 with Digital OutputThe Focusrite Plantium Octopre is one of the most popular mutliple preamp and A/D converter units thanks to its great flexibility, and value for money. Now Focusrite have introduced the Octopre Mark II. It still features eight great preamps, and 16 digital outputs (or 8 at 96kHz), but now at a cheaper price! It still records at 24bit/96KHz and also features phantom power on all channels, pad on all channels, optional word clock sync and direct line outs on 6.35mm jacks for each discrete channel making this a great preamp for recording live gigs (use it as a preamp for your desk and route the ADAT out to your recording rig, or vice versa). Focusrite also provide two High-impedance instrument inputs so you can plug a guitar or bass directly into the front of the unit without the need for a D.I. Box. With 8 first class Focusrite pres and ADAT output, the units are great ways to extend interfaces or digital desks with ADAT Lightpipe inputs. If you are looking to save money and do not need built in dynamics and low pass (if you are routing to a desk for example) then the OctoPre MK2 is ideal. It’s pres are designed to handle the loudest sources without clipping and with 24bit headroom, there is no longer a need to reach an average peak level above around -18dBFS unlike when 16bit technology was common and you had to peak close to 0dB to get a good S/N ratio. So unless you feel like you really need to compress straight away, the MKII may prove to be a good option over the Platinum Octopre. Here’s what Focusrite say about the Octopre MKIIWith eight channels of Focusrite pre-amplification and a built-in 24-bit / 96 kHz ADAT output, OctoPre MkII is Focusrite’s powerful input upgrade for your Pro Tools system, or any digital audio workstation. It’s also a great expansion for any analogue or digital console, or hard disk recorder. The digital output allows users to make the most of often-neglected ADAT inputs; ideal for expanding the number of mic-pre inputs on your interface.
