A unique opportunity to buy probably the best FOSTEX G24S anywhere in the world.
Unless you have access to a DeLorean Time Machine and whisk yourself back to 1992, you will not find a better example of this machine anywhere. Period. That said, given the choice over time travelling back to 1992 and unboxing a brand new 1992 version, I personally would pick this machine any day.
Why?
Because I spent over 2000 having this machine totally re-capped and new heads put on it.
In 1992 Fostex brought this machine out with, what were then, the latest developments in components, namely the surface mounted components, which unfortunately, because they were the first ones available, later led to them failing and leaking electrolyte onto the audio boards. That’s why many G16S and G24S machines are now total wrecks. This machine has had over 40 of these surface mounted capacitors replaced on each of the 24 audio boards (you do the maths). They have been replaced with standard electrolytic capacitors which are usually good for anywhere between 25 and 50 years.
Basically, they will outlive you.
If that wasn’t enough, this machine comes with a brand new head already fitted. I managed to source some of the last known heads from a service centre in Italy. A brand new head has been fitted to the machine during the refurbishment.
I will supply another new head and the old head too that came originally with the machine.
Given that a machine with a worn head is practically useless, you’re in effect guaranteeing the machine to be usable well into the future.
This alone is worth more than 1000, if you could even source one.
The machine has been modded previously to be able to run at 7.5IPS (the standard speed is 15IPS) in order to save tape. That said, a standard 10.5′ reel running at 15IPS gives recording time of about 30 minutes (24 tracks x infinite bit @ infinite sample rate = MASSIVE HARD DRIVE!!!)
The machine also comes with the factory fitted synchronisation board which enables it to either send or receive MTC or send or receive SMPTE timecode. It can either chase a source or can be the master in a setup.
The machine comes with a take-up reel and a new reel of Quantegy 406 tape to get you started. I have a few reels of new Quantegy 406 left, along with some used AGFA 468 and also some used ZONAL 675 (ex-BBC, used once).
All of this tape is sticky-shed syndrome free and has been stored in optimal conditions.
If you want to audition the machine email me to arrange a suitable time. I am based in the North West, just north of Manchester. If you’re in the market for a machine to record drums and guitars like the old days, then this is a great machine.
I will courier the machine on the strict understanding that I will package it to the best of my abilities (I do not have the original packaging but would make something suitable) but all costs will be born by the purchaser.
