This SC2 has been refurbished and recapped with uprated caps in the power supply, more decoupling and high-quality bipolar caps in the audio path. The meter bulbs have been replaced with LEDs. A new bypass switch & knob have been fitted (not shown in the photo). Tested & working 100%
Part of the Joe Meek range of outboard gear, this stereo compressor was designed by famed British engineer Ted Fletcher. These early Joe Meek units were sold in small quantities but have gained a big reputation
The SC range is complex and comprises many versions, updates & revisions. V1.07 is an early model from the original series and this is a very early iteration of the V1.07 with two circuit boards inside and no output pot… See what I mean about versions?
The SC uses optical devices for gain reduction. Light Dependent Resistors (LDRs or Optos) have long been famed for their smooth response. Their drawback, when compared with FET or VCA compressors, is a relatively slow response, but the response time, and consequent smoothness, is a big part of their appeal. Ted Fletcher has devised ways to speed up opto compression so this is no slow-moving compressor but one with bite & attitude when required
I went into my test session expecting drama & lots of colouration but found the V1.07 to be a subtle, well-behaved unit with a very smooth sound. Once I started digging in I found the dirtier, more overt compression effects the SC2 is capable of. The slope control makes a huge difference to the sound and you find yourself recalibrating gain & compression each time you switch slope. Its a very hands-on compressor but the results absolutely justify the effort

I now appreciate why these early Joe Meek compressors have the following they do. They are more complex sonically than they appear. If you like compressors with a sound, that are obvious, the SC2 can do that. But it can also do that smooth, sexy compression that optos are famous for. Im tempted to say its another great tool for the compression toolbox but think its more than that – its a compressor you could work with and really learn to appreciate

Joemeek compression is in my opinion some of the nicest sounding, warm/dark compression out there. I truly love the sound that this unit give

The JoeMeek SC2 is a very cool character compressor; its almost more apparent in its timbral coloration than in its gain reduction (though its generally pretty overt in both
It is VERY coloured in fact, thats kind of the whole point I liked it on clean electric guitars and the drum buss
I like it. But I like heavy, colored compression which the Meek can do
I love mine on kick, parallel drum push, bass push, gtr subs, and even the occasional 2 mix (with extreme caution!)
Its colored and it looks good, its colored and it sounds good, you can crank it up all the way and it still sounds good, it has good-sized knobs and an uncluttered front panel, its well-visible and readable from the distance, it has balanced in/outs on XLRs, its downright cheap so you dont have to break the bank after shelling out big bucks for your Main Compressor

TechnicalOpto compressor with a short signal path and electronically-balanced inputs & outputs. True bypass. 220 VAC power input on a standard IEC connector. UK or Euro power cable supplied on request

ConditionIn very good used condition. The unit has a couple of scratches and some rack rash round the mounting holes, but is otherwise almost unmarked. Refurbished with a new bypass switch & recapped with an uprated power supply & larger bipolar caps in the audio path. Tested & working 100%. Photos show the item for sale

Vintage Gear

All vintage gear will have case scratches and marks. It may also have or develop noisy pots and switches, and backup batteries may fail. I make my descriptions as accurate as possible but please understand that vintage gear will not be perfect and adjust your expectations accordingly
