Written by David Friend, Alan R Pearlman and Thomas D Piggot, this is one of the Holy Grails of ARP history and a nicely preserved first edition from 1974. It is 44 years old.
Put simply, they designed and built the ARP Odyssey and then wrote what is probably the most comprihensive, in-depth and yet easy to understand synthesizer guide book of all. If you want to create your own distinctive patches like the Odyssey-toting keyboard legends of old, then forget all the YouTube cliche’s because this is the book that taught them how to do it.
If you’re interested, then you already know what it is and what the inside looks like – which is why most of these photos are just here to give you an idea of it’s overall condition.
The cover is well preserved for it’s age and any spots or discoloration that you can see are believed to signs of age. Specifically, chemical reactions between the ink, gloss coating and paper, or in the case of the top edge, just the result of sitting on a book shelf for the last forty years.
The pages within are still bright and clean. (And and difference in colour that you see here is just a result of my phone camera)
As for imperfections, it has a very slight dink on the upper right hand corner – which I’ve emphasized in the photos
You can also see a slight blemish at the top of the front page
It also has a nice ‘period’ shop stamp (with correction) – although curiously, Belwin-Mills Music Ltd seems to have been a music publishing company that was renamed EMI Harmonies Ltd back in 19th May 1994, rather than a shop
I’ll happily post it anywhere in the world and it will be very well packed – but if you’re located outside the UK, then I’ll have to get another postal quote based on your location.
Happy Bidding, and may it go to somebody who both appreciates it – and more importantly, uses it for the purpose it was intended for
Rare book stores price these First editions at around 117
