Up for grabs is my wonderful Mackie LM-3204 5U rack mount mixer. These mixers are amazing and well sought after because they offer many features in a relatively compact unit. The basic spec is as follows:
32 inputs configured as 16 stereo channels
3 band (Hi, Mid, Lo) EQ on all channels
4 stereo auxiliary returns, with 2 available on each channel via simple switch selector (Aux 1 + 2 or 3 + 4)
Balance control on each channel
Alt 3/4 output switch on each channel
Gain/volume control dial for each channel
Chirograph strip to label individual channels under main channel volume controls.
These mixers are great for synths and drum machines etc with the stereo channels and the flexibility of having 2 from a choice of a possible 4 external effects units fed to each channel via the aux returns makes these superb for tweaking and mixing whole systems. The 3 band EQ is great for further tweaking the sound of each stereo inputted device. There are 4 stereo channel inserts available on the first 4 channels for the addition of EQ, compression etc, and the 2 mic inputs are available on the first 2 channels for this purpose. At only 5 units of rack space, these take up very little space.
Physically this unit is in excellent, clean condition. There are some scratches and marks from racking, mostly on the base of the unit, some on the top and minimal marking to the rack ears around the bolt holes. There are no missing buttons, knob or slider caps and the chirograph strip for labeling each channel has never been used, so is like new. The manual is practically unused, so is an excellent example of such a document.
The included high resolution images should be looked at to show its condition. Please ignore the lens barrel curving evident in the images. This unit is not warped, it’s just the photos!
The mixer is mostly functioning as it should, but it would benefit from a service as there are a couple of channels that don’t appear to work properly. Basically, either the left or right side of such channels are not balanced properly and signals don’t work properly. I can’t remember exactly which channels are the worst, but I think there were at least 2 that were affected in this way, but no more than 4. Also, occasionally one of the master channels will start to crackle and fade out when inputs are being fed through the mixer. However, I was able to bring this back by maxing a live channel momentarily and it would kick it back.
Obviously these issues need addressing, but I’m sure a service will achieve this. I have been using it like this for a while and simply worked around the issue!
