The synth is in full working order and is in good condition for its age – no damage, just dings in the metal casing, fading to the labels on the panel – see pictures. All keys, buttons, sliders and the disc drive function correctly – the screen is bright and clear.
It is a UK 240v model with attached cable and I’m including a new old stock box of floppies – if you tape over the bottom-left hole in the disc, they become compatible with the drive. I’ve done this already to one of the discs to save the factory presets to test that the drive works.
The synth will be well-packaged for shipping – check my feedback for reassurance. I don’t have the manual, but it can be downloaded here:

I carried out the below work to bring this late 80s synth back to full functionality:
– Replaced all tac switches on the buttons – a number of them didn’t work and others took force to operate. All operating correctly now.- Replaced the belt on the disc drive – the drive now reads/writes discs.- Replaced the ‘Value’ data slider – these are hard to find, but luckily, uses the same potentiometer as the Roland D70 Tone Palette sliders.- Cleaned all key contacts.- Replaced the internal battery (a CR2032).- Loaded the factory presets, including the lovely ‘Warm Pad Fade’.
The Roland D-20 is a trimmed down version of the Roland D-50 – it’s capable of similar sounds, albeit not as rich as the D-50. Unlike the D-50, the D-20 is multitimbral and boasts a feature, making it one of the earliest ‘modern’ workstation keyboards as you can compose and record a whole song internally.
It has a late 80s sound – some of the sounds are surprisingly warm, but it’s obviously a digital synth at heart. To get an idea of how it sounds, listen to Woody’s Piano Shack demo of some of the presets and does a great job of demonstrating how pleasant the D-20 can sound.
