Tascam DA-88 Hi8 8-channel digital audio recorder. Comes with original box and both owner’s and service manual.
I bought this about a year ago in a non-working state with the hope of restoring it . When a tape is inserted the screen displays “E.H 1-8.t” as an error, which the manual explains is caused when a wrong type of tape is inserted. This happened even when inserting the correct Hi8 type tape. When the machine is started in maintenance mode (the method is explained in the manual), the tape error is ignored and the machine records and also plays correctly for about 3 or 4 seconds then the audio cuts in and out. At this point a rattling/grinding sound is heard from the tape mechanism. I think from this it’s safe to assume the electronics are performing correctly and that the issue is with the tape transport. (I only ever tested the unbalanced analogue inputs and outputs as I don’t have a mixer with the correct connections) From some research online, I would guess that the tape tension is not correct and the mechanism needs cleaning and/or restoring. I was hoping that this would be an electronics repair not a mechanical one and I don’t have the expertise or knowledge of tape transports to fix it, thus the reason for selling. Could be a nice project for someone who is into tape mechanisms. (also maybe I just had the wrong tape!)
From the revision sheet in the manual the machine was updated to firmware version 3.01, the machine also has many I/O combinations for various interfaces and controllers (see pictures).
If you are local to SN4 I would prefer collection as the parcel would be 16+kg and I don’t trust couriers not to damage it. However, I am still happy to post and I will make sure its well packaged, if you have a preferred courier let me know after you win.
