Great vintage analog four track cassette recorder,
This machine would be a great option as;-
A relaxing alternative to making demos with a computer – no screen in face, begging you to over-fiddle with the results.High quality front end for a sound card without pre-ampsA way to subtle warmth to sound before reintroducing it to the digital domainA means to access the cassette demos you made years ago and forgot about
Stand out features of this model include;-
Switchable DBX noise reduction. Two speeds – the higher is better fidelity, but the lower is compatible with cheaper 4 tracks and consumer cassette players.XLR inputs as well as 1/4″ jack inputsSix channel mixer means up to six mono sources or three stereo sources can be recorded at once… once all four tracks have been recorded onto, the extra 2 channels can be used as effects returns, allowing you to EQ one stereo effects (a stereo reverb for instance) or two eq and pan two mono effects (e.g. a tape delay and a spring reverb a la Lee “Scratch” Perry). This unit works extremely well, but it has some cosmetic shortcomings, reflected in a lower price than I usually ask for this model.
I received the unit with seveal loose sockets which have been resoldered. The unit was also very dusty but it has since been dissasembled and the meachanisms knobs and faders individually cleaned and lubricated cleaned with appropriate products from caig and servisol and reassembled – the result is a mixer that works with very little in the way of handling noise. PLease note the faders do not feel very smooth unde rthe hand, this is normal for this generation fo tascam, but the sound is very smooth in use.
Rubber belt pinch roller and idler tire have been checked – they are in good condition and should work for many years to come. The magnetic heads have been cleaned and degaussed. The playback levels, record levels and playback speed are within factory limits.
The cassette door is detached but still sits in palce over the cassette cavity keeping dust out of the mechanism.
There is one nasty break to the plastic corner, but I have internally friction welded this so though the mmend is ugly when inspected close- up, it is a strong mend.
Beyond that the condition of the unit is fair – some yellowing of the knobs but they are all present, some minor dings and scratches throughout.
The unit is supplied with a cmpatible 3 pin UK 240v power supply unit I wired up. As can be seen in the photo from the rear the finish on the plug is a bit ugly but it is very sturdy. This is intended for UK, but it will work in EU with just a plug pin adaptor, and voltage transformers are available on ebay for other regions.
The unit is supplied with 1 x sealed and unused 60 min TDK chrome type II tape.
I will provide a .pdf file of the user manual to the buyer via email.
Domestic sales – postage to UK mainland is included… for islands etc, I will cover the first 12 of the postage costs, then invoice the difference to the buyer.
I do not have the original packaging, but the item will be sent in a sturdy box with plenty of internal packaging and a waterproof outer layer, clearly marked as fragile and appropriately insured. I ask that the buyer test the item is as described within 3 days of arrival – I have siginifcant experience workign on tascam portastudios and will always try to help buyers with issues which arise in the first few months after the sale, but returns are at my discretion after 3 days have elapsed!
