Warm Audio WA12 Mic Preamp & DI (API 312 Clone).If you ever wondered what made those 1970s American records sound so good a big part of the equation was the API 312 mic preamp. Warm Audio have recreated this legendary preamp using the highest quality components – and it sounds like it.Whatever you plug into the WA12 preamp sounds like it expands and comes to life. Things immediately sound present and more solid. Some of the magic comes from the custom wound CineMag output transformer that saturates richly, adds even order harmonics and rounds off transients (itself based on an iconic 1970s design). Another part of the mix is the hand wired Class A, all analogue circuitry using top quality components.The WA12 features mic and line inputs with the line input being switchable to HiZ for use as an instrument DI. There is also a Tone switch that alters the mic input impedance to optimise matching with ribbon mics. The tone switch can also be used to add a different colour to non ribbon mics. HPF and switchable phantom power as standard. Balanced outputs on XLR and 1/4 jack. This is most definitely not a transparent mic preamp: whatever you connect comes out sounding bigger, better and larger than life. I thought the preamps on my Apogee interface were pretty good until I A/Bd with this – there was a world of difference with the WA12 being a massive improvement.Only selling as Ive got another one and cant justify having two since Ive only ever used one at a time.Only downside is the external PSU but I guess that was the best place for the designers to cut costs rather than adding the extra expense of an internal supply. Grab yourself a piece of magic. You wont regret it.
