YAMAHA PSS-570 F.M. Synthesizer
Ultimate Hacked/Modded & Circuit-bent vintage F.M. Synthesizer circa 1988. Loaded with funky new circuitry including an 8-step Analog Step-Sequencer & LTC1799 Precision Oscillator/Clock for pitch modulation. Fully Circuit-bent F.M. synthesizer with Patch-bay, live “Glitch” buttons and spring-loaded toggle switches for instant hands-on performance. Audio and modular inputs/outputs added so that for example, external audio can be processed through the PSS-570’s built-in Analog Chorus circuit. Step-Sequencer can be externally synced via 3.5mm sockets on the back of the machine, or runs from it’s own clock, with speed knob on the side of the machine.
Analog Chorus modified with RATE knob and PHASER mode.
Keys can be triggered externally via metal bolts on each key (standard +5volt “gate” signal). Keys beautifully painted with various metallic & glow-in-the-dark paint, finished with high quality matt lacquer. For sale is my “Ultimate” Circuit Bent F.M. Synthesizer. It’s highly modular, very powerful, it makes a whole world of distinctively weird F.M. synth sounds & it looks absolutely amazing.I’ve even hacked the keyboard, so that you can trigger the sounds externally (I use ENGINEERS@WORK MIDI – Trigger/Gate converter).Below are pics, brief description and a demo video. In the highly likely event that this auction is not displaying correctly, you can see pics and vid here –

The PSS-570 is a top-of-the-line F.M. Synthesizer from the late 1980’s. It contains an infamous Yamaha F.M. Chip, with loads of preset instruments along with a programmable “Digital Synthesizer” section for creating custom patches. It also has PCM rhythms, loads of options for Bass/Chords & a real Analog Chorus circuit.

A pretty damn impressive machine, even without the mods. Now it is the ultimate experimental electronic synthesizer -BEHOLD… Metallic & Glow-in-the-dark keys, with shiny metal bolts that can be used to externally trigger the machine’s awesome new F.M. sounds (and it’s drums) –
Built-in Analog Step-Sequencer for programmable Trance-Gate & 8-Step Arpeggiator – Patch-Bay & Glitch buttons for ultimate experimental F.M. chip –
Even the machine’s analog Chorus circuit has been upgraded – As you can see, tons of new features have been added to this machine, to expand it’s capabilities well beyond anything that the original engineers could have imagined. This machine is now capable of producing a whole world of unique and distinctive new sounds, many of which go well beyond the capabilities of conventional synthesizers.
Glitch-Punk aesthetic and brief description of mods for Circuit-bent F.M. Synthesizer
The PSS-570’s internal speakers have been removed and replaced with numerous control knobs, switches and flashing LED lights. All mounted upon solid green PCB, shiny metal strips and a few tastefully placed rusty metal washers. This machine has very eye-catching and frankly beautiful “Glitch-Punk” aesthetic. Even the labels are made using original 1980’s “Dymo” label maker (same as what you’d find in the old science labs). It looks awesome, sounds amazing and has loads of cool new features.
This machine comes with patch-leads, PSU and a PDF manual with details of the mods, upgrades, etc. Below is a brief description of the new features –
F.M. Patch-bay – 2 x Rows of shiny metal bolts connected to the machine’s processor & F.M. Chip. A row of switches can be used to interrupt the data flow between the processor and F.M. Chip, and the included patch-leads can be used to re-patch the connections, thus generating a range of unique “glitch” style sounds, many of which are well beyond the original capabilities of F.M. synthesizers.Needless to say, “glitch” sounds are by their very nature random and largely unpredictable. Different combinations of patching tend to generate different styles of sounds, from bleepy vintage computer-style sounds, minimalist tones, ambient drones and industrial chords to outrageous electronic noise and technologically damaged distortion.
Glitch Buttons – Similar to the Patch-bay, this array of buttons and spring-loaded toggle switches will generate unique and very impressive patches by selectively corrupting the machine’s built-in patches. Works particularly well on the machines single-finger-chord mode. Each button/switch will generate different effect, and with patience some very impressive envelope/tonal/distortion effects can be added to the patches.
Pitch-Mod – Addition of an LTC1799 Precision Oscillator circuit allows pitch modulation of the F.M. chip without affecting the tempo of rhythms or the envelope settings. Use 2 x knobs on the right side of the machine or the built-in step-sequencer on the left panel.
Step-Sequencer – left panel houses an 8-step analog step-sequencer that can be used as a programmable GATE and also a programmable ARPEGGIATOR using the 8 x knobs to set individual pitch for each step and a switch to activate each step ON/OFF. Also a master ON/OFF switch and knob along with loads of LED lights to indicate status of various features.Step sequencer has it’s own CLOCK to control speed. Use knob on the left side of the machine to alter speed or 3.5mm sockets on the back of machine to externally SYNC & RESET the step-sequencer. Also a CLOCK output socket that can be used to tap the clock and drive other external gear. Additional 3.5mm sockets to tap the step-sequencers’ GATE, PITCH-MOD.
Other mods include AUDIO INPUT socket into the PSS-570’s analog chorus circuit, MIC input socket, loads of modular outputs on 3.5mm sockets, painted METAL & GLOW-IN-THE-DARK keys, with shiny metal bolts that can be used to trigger the keys externally from virtually any source (!!!!)… Got a device with some flashing lights? You can actually connect it to the magic bolts on the keys and trigger the PSS-570’s sounds (!!!) Cool, eh? Especially cool, as this particular model of F.M. Synth has no MIDI capabilities, and not even any retrofit kit available. Now this PSS-570 can be sequenced externally in the old-school way – just feed pulses into the magic bolts (!!!)(FYI – I use “Engineers@work MIDI – TRIGGER/GATE Converter”)
Very awesome, powerful & unique synth – and looks cool as hell too ;]
